"Montgenevre was France?s first official ski resort and has just celebrated its 100th birthday. Its reputation as one the largest and snowiest ski resorts in Europe led to its being chosen as host of the 2006 Winter Olympics. This ancient village is situated just 2 kms from the Italian border, flanked by lovely wooded mountains. The Franco-Italian Milky Way skiing area has over 400 kms of pistes, stretching to Sestriere and Sauze in Italy. There are ski slopes for all levels, and for snowboarders there?s a half pipe and snow park in neighbouring Claviere. There are also short drives to other French resorts including Serre Chevalier and Briancon. Montgenevre has undergone a transformation in the last decade. Just last year a major underground tunnel was completed, taking away all the through traffic and improving everyone?s experience and quality of life. Ever imagined skiing and flying at the same time? Well if you?re feeling adventurous you could always try the ?Whoopy?, an inflatable flying wing that lets you surf the air and carve the snow! Alternatively you can have a skate on the ice rink or shoot down the toboggan runs. Off-piste, Montegenevre has plenty to offer; the bars and restaurants have a reputation for having a great atmosphere sometimes lacking in other, larger resorts. Local culinary specialities include stewed wild boar and cabbage sausages. Plus the border with Italian neighbours doesn?t really exist so the pizzas are amazing! And there?s fun to be had in the summer months too; for the adults there?s golf (Montegenevre has its own course), canyon climbing and paragliding; for the kids there are donkey rides and you can even rent out a Red Indian Tipi on the mountain slopes of nearby Val-des-Pres. You can get to Montgenevre from Geneva by car in 1.5 hours. Alternatively you can travel from Lyon in 3.5 hours.
