Lake Bourget, a jewel box of beauty
The city of Aix-les-Bains enjoys a very attractive geographical location. Only 1 hour from Geneva and 30 minutes from Annecy, the Riviera des Alpes is nestled on the shores of Lac du Bourget. The lake is considered to be the largest natural lake in France, with its 18 km length giving it the impression of an inland sea, and offers a wide variety of landscapes, both urban and wild. It is surrounded by the palaces of the Belle Epoque as well as the sloping hills of the Chautagne and the wooded mountains of the Dent du Chat. Surrounded by the massifs of Epine, Mont du Chat, Chambotte, Mont Revard and the Bauges, which fall steeply into its blue and green waters, Lac du Bourget has a dozen of creeks and beaches for the greatest pleasure of families. Aix-les-Bains offers a variety of water sports: sailing, canoeing, paddling, swimming, diving, water skiing... in water that can reach 26 degrees in summer!
The mountains as a backdrop
A stone's throw away from the lakeside town are the unspoilt mountains of the Bauges and Chartreuse regional nature parks. Numerous viewpoints overlook the Lac du Bourget and let you admire its magnificent scenery from all angles. Enjoy a panoramic view from the Mont Revard lookout, the Nivelet cross, the Shepherds' cross, the Doria waterfall or the Mont-Margériaz!
In the Hinterland of Aix-les-Bains, two summits particularly attract the attention of inhabitants and visitors: Mont Revard and the Dent du Chat. At an altitude of 1,550 m, Mont Revard is a huge open plateau overlooking the Bauges massif. In winter, it is the largest cross-country skiing area in France with 150 km of well-groomed cross-country trails for skating and classic skiing. For snowshoe enthusiasts, 60 km of trails are dedicated to them. As for alpine skiers, they can enjoy the pleasure of skiing on 50 km of trails in the very first winter sports resort created in France. In summer, the plateau becomes the playground for hikers, cyclists and paragliders! On the western shore of the lake, a canine-like peak culminates at almost 1,400 metres: the Dent du Chat. From the Relais du Mont du Chat, the Col du Chat or the Bourget-du-lac, depending on your level of hiking, reach this mythical summit and enjoy a grandiose view of the lake and the Alps.
